Over het museum
The Kašperské Hory seismic station, code-named KHC, was established in the 1960s of the 20th century in the Kristýna adit, where gold was once mined. The adit, dating from 1805, lies in the Amálina Valley by the Zlatý potok stream, in the forest behind the town. Thanks to the low level of interference, the station is among the most sensitive in the world and forms part of the Czech regional seismic network as well as the world network of seismic stations.
In 1973 the engineer Axel Plešinger developed there, and as the first in the world routinely operated, a recording apparatus that captured seismic signals across a very wide range of frequencies. This approach became the basis of modern broadband seismometers. The station is operated by the Geofyzikální ústav Akademie věd ČR (Geophysical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences), and the data measured are continuously passed on to Prague and to international centres.
The newly reconstructed seismic observatory building houses a museum of seismometry with historical and modern instruments, a lecture hall and a geological exhibition. The visit includes a guided walk through the adit, where working seismometers are housed in steel containers about 100 metres from the entrance, deep in the rock. The adit is also a winter roost for bats, which is why it is closed from November to March.
