Over het museum
Ctěnice Chateau began as a Gothic fortified manor surrounded by marshes and a water moat, which the Prague burgher Jan Cajzlmajstr bought in 1372. In the 16th century the Hrzán z Harasova family rebuilt it as a Renaissance residence with a Renaissance garden on the site of today's park. At the beginning of the 18th century the owners gave the chateau a Baroque makeover and added farm buildings, such as a granary, stables and a riding hall. The park was divided into an axial French garden and an English landscape park. The estate passed successively to the Hrzán, Valdštejn, Losy z Losinthalu, Windischgrätz, Des Fours and Schoeller families.
After the Second World War the state nationalised the estate and handed it over to the State Farm of the Capital City of Prague. It ceased to serve as a noble residence, and careless alterations and neglect led to its decline. In 1993 the chateau, the farm buildings and the park passed to the City of Prague, and from 1997 to 2004 the site underwent extensive reconstruction.
After the Prague City Museum took over, the site became a place presenting traditional folk culture and crafts. Permanent exhibitions fill the chateau's halls, although the original furnishings have not survived. The complex also includes a bistro, a hotel, a riding hall and a well-known garden nursery. The chateau hosts lectures, small exhibitions, school programmes and seasonal festivals.
