Over het museum
The predecessor of the château was an early Gothic castle built after 1300 on a rock above the Jizera, probably by Havel of the Markvartic family, who after the new seat wrote himself “of Rohozec”. In the 14th and 15th centuries the estate passed through the hands of the lords of Turgov, the lords of Michalovice and the Krajíř of Krajek family. At the beginning of the 16th century the castle was rebuilt under Konrád Krajíř into a late Gothic seat. From the middle of the 16th century it belonged to the Vartenberks, who after 1600 converted it into a Renaissance château.
After the Battle of White Mountain the Vartenberks’ property was confiscated, and in 1623 Albrecht of Wallenstein bought it. As early as 1628 it was acquired by Mikuláš Des Fours, and his descendants resided here for more than three centuries, until the confiscation in 1945. The family, written from 1831 as Des Fours Walderode, gradually altered the château in line with the taste of the time. A baroque chapel of the Holy Trinity with baroque and rococo furnishings survives from the baroque remodelling; the present Empire appearance of the château was designed by the architect Jan Filip Joendl.
In the 19th century the most significant interiors were created, for example the dining room with romantic Gothic painting and some rooms on the second floor in the style of the second rococo. Today the interiors are presented as they looked in the 1930s, when Count Mikuláš Vladimír Des Fours Walderode lived here with his wife Gabriela Karolína and sons Maxmilián and Ludvík. The château includes a small English park with statues of saints from the 18th and 19th centuries and an artificial grotto with a view over the Jizera valley.
