Over het museum
The site of today's chateau had a fortress in the 15th century, later a manor house, and after 1690 a smaller Baroque chateau of the knightly Lamott z Frintropp family. From 1740 the estate belonged to the Valdštejn family, who did not live there, and the building served mainly farming purposes. A fundamental change came in 1820, when Prince Karel Alain Gabriel Rohan bought Sychrov. The French noble family, which had settled in the Habsburg monarchy after the revolution, kept its main seat here for more than one hundred and twenty years.
After an Empire-style reconstruction completed in 1834, Prince Kamil Rohan had the chateau rebuilt in the Romantic neo-Gothic style in 1847–1862, to designs by Bernard Grueber. Almost exclusively Czech artists and craftsmen took part in the work. The most important among them was the woodcarver Petr Bušek, whose work defines the atmosphere of the interiors. The prince also looked after the English park, which became the model for several other Czech arboreta.
At the turn of the 1920s and 1930s the chateau underwent a Functionalist modernisation, in which part of the original neo-Gothic decoration disappeared. After 1945 it was confiscated and became state property. From 1 May 1950 it was opened to the public on a small scale, and the tour route expanded over the following decades. From the beginning of the 1990s, extensive restoration of the exteriors, interiors and park has been under way, with the aim of bringing the chateau closer to its appearance in the second half of the 19th century.
