Over het museum
Benthall Hall is a mullioned manor house on a plateau above the River Severn, home to the Benthall family, who trace their roots on this site back to Anglo-Saxon times. The present house is thought to have been built around 1535 by William Benthall and was improved in 1580. During the Civil Wars it was fortified for the Royalists and then taken by Parliament, and damage from the fighting can still be seen in the stonework.
The family lost the estate through the female line, and from 1845 to 1930 the house was let to tenants. The best known were the brothers George and Arthur Maw. Arthur ran the family firm of Maw and Co., which made decorative encaustic tiles at nearby Jackfield, and used the entrance hall as a showroom, laying it with the firm's tiles. George was a geologist, botanist and plant collector who made the garden his home for collecting rare bulbs, above all crocuses, and published a monograph on the genus in 1886. Hybrid crocuses from his collection still flower there.
When the house came up for auction in 1934, Mary Clementina Benthall bought it and restored it. She gave it to the National Trust in 1958. A member of the Benthall family has lived in the house as tenant ever since. A new glasshouse was built in 2025 to grow some of the plants Maw collected, and the neighbouring Restoration-period church of St Bartholomew has recently come into National Trust care.

The entrance has an access ramp and the main hall on the ground floor is step-free, but the other ground-floor rooms are reached by steps and the upper rooms by stairs. Main garden routes are step-free, with some steep slopes and compact earth, gravel and cobbled surfaces; the woodland walk is steep and uneven. An accessible toilet is through the rose garden, and two accessible parking spaces are by Visitor Reception. A braille guide and a large-print guide are available, as is a sensory bag. The site is part of the Sunflower Lanyard Scheme, and there are quiet corners in the garden. Assistance dogs are welcome in the house and garden.
