Over het museum

Coalport China Museum occupies the former Coalport China Works on the north bank of the River Severn in the Ironbridge Gorge. The factory was established in 1796 by John Rose and grew into one of the leading makers of fine china in Britain during the 19th century, selling its wares around the world. Production continued on the site until 1926, when the firm's operations were moved to Stoke-on-Trent.

The empty factory buildings were later acquired by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, and the museum opened to the public in 1976. Its collection includes historic Coalport and Caughley porcelain, which are recognised as national collections, together with surviving industrial buildings such as the bottle kilns used to fire the pottery. There were demonstrations of traditional ceramic techniques and a hands-on workshop area for painting and other ceramic activities, particularly in school holidays.

In 2026 the museum passed, with the other Ironbridge Gorge museums, from the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust to the National Trust. It is one of the sites that are being reopened in phases, and it is currently closed while essential conservation work is carried out. The nearby Tar Tunnel, a 914-metre tunnel dug in 1786 to bring coal out of mines at river level, is part of the same group of sites.
