Over het museum
The Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway is run by volunteers of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS), a charity formed in 1961. It follows most of the route of an old branch line that grew out of the Slamannan Railway. The line carried goods and minerals from the early 1850s, had passenger trains from 1856 until 1956, and kept some freight and colliery traffic into the 1970s.
For years the society had no permanent home and kept its locomotives and carriages at several places. In 1979 it acquired land at Bo'ness and began to rebuild the railway on the old trackbed. The route was extended in stages through Kinneil and Birkhill, and since 2010 trains have run all the way to Manuel Junction, where the line meets the Edinburgh to Glasgow main line.
Many of the station buildings and fittings were brought from other places in Scotland. The Birkhill station building, for example, came from Monifieth. Today most trains are steam hauled, with heritage diesel trains on some days, and a return journey from Bo'ness to Manuel takes about 70 minutes. Across the tracks from Bo'ness station stands the Museum of Scottish Railways, which the same society runs.

Step-free access by ramp leads to the platforms, buffet and shop, which are on one level. Most historic carriages cannot take wheelchairs; a modified accessible carriage normally runs on most services but is currently out of use for maintenance, and wheelchair users can travel on the diesel train services by prior arrangement. Visitors who need step-free boarding or help should contact the railway in advance. The museum is reached by a footbridge or a level crossing near the car park entrance, and not from the platform. It has a lift to the Engineering Shed gallery and an accessible toilet, and some locomotives and carriages cannot be entered in a wheelchair. Accessible parking bays are close to the station entrance.
