Over het museum
Bramham Park was begun in 1698 for Robert Benson, later Lord Bingley, who drew on ideas from a tour of Italy to plan a house as one element of a grand landscaped park. It was intended as a summer residence, which may explain its fairly modest size. The house and its formal gardens belong to a transitional moment in British design, between the formal layouts of the 17th century and the freer landscape movement of the later 18th century, and the estate describes the gardens as a rare survivor of that period.
A serious fire in 1828 left the house empty for decades. It was restored in the early 20th century and has remained in the same family, now the Lane Fox family, ever since. It is still a lived-in family home, which is why some private rooms are not shown to visitors.
The estate covers about 350 hectares of landscape and is also used for events: the Bramham International Horse Trials take place there each year, and the Leeds Festival has been held in the park since 2003. The house and grounds have been used as locations for television and film productions. Visits to the house are by arrangement, mainly for groups, and the gardens and grounds can be visited by appointment on weekdays.
