Over het museum
Harewood House was built for Edwin Lascelles from 1759 and its family moved in around 1771. The architect was John Carr of York, Robert Adam designed the interiors and Thomas Chippendale supplied furniture. From 1772 Lancelot "Capability" Brown laid out the parkland, and in the 1840s Charles Barry remodelled parts of the house and designed the south terrace. The Lascelles family wealth came largely from sugar plantations in the Caribbean and the trade in enslaved people, a history the house now openly presents to visitors.
The Lascelles family became Earls of Harewood in 1812 and still live on the estate. The house and grounds first opened to the public in 1950. In 1986 the house and its collections passed to an independent charitable trust, which runs them today. The Terrace Gallery opened in 1989 as a contemporary art space in an English country house, and the estate holds a yearly Christmas event and a craft biennial.
The collections include furniture, ceramics, textiles and paintings by artists such as Turner, who first visited in 1797. Visitors tour the State Floor with its grand rooms and the Below Stairs servants' areas, and can explore more than 140 acres of gardens and grounds. A long-term programme called Reimagining our Landscape runs from 2023 to 2033 and includes a new adventure playscape.
