Over het museum

Chenies Manor House stands on a site that has been occupied for centuries. The Cheyne family held the estate for about 300 years, and part of the present house, an early brick building with a tower and two wings, dates from around 1460. It is noted for its tall, patterned Tudor brick chimneys and is regarded as one of the earliest recorded domestic brick buildings in England.

The house passed by inheritance to Anne Sapcote, whose third husband Sir John Russell, later the first Earl of Bedford, came to the manor around 1526. Under the Russell family the house was extended and improved to receive royal visits during the Tudor period, and it contains Tudor rooms and fireplaces added in the 1530s. The Russells left for Woburn in 1627.

In 1954 Elizabeth and Alastair Macleod Matthews first saw the neglected manor and began restoring house and garden. Using garden plans drawn up for Lucy Harrington, Countess of Bedford, in the early 17th century, Elizabeth created a series of themed garden rooms in Tudor style, covering about five and a half acres with box and yew topiary. The gardens won the Historic Houses Association and Christie's Garden of the Year award in 2009.

The house is still owned by the Macleod-Matthews family, who run it with volunteer guides. It opens to the public in the afternoon on Mondays and Tuesdays from April to October, with garden festivals for tulips in spring and dahlias from late August, and it is also a location for film and television.
