Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1833 by members of the Worcestershire Natural History Society. It first stood on Angel Street, moved to larger premises on Foregate Street in 1836, and since 1896 has occupied the Victoria Institute, a building created to hold a public library, a museum and a school of art and science. Its distinctive Victorian exterior and grand staircase are part of the visit.
The collections cover art, natural history, archaeology and local history. The city's fine art holdings are especially rich in British Impressionist painters, including Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes and Dame Laura Knight, and landscapes by the Worcester painter Benjamin Williams Leader hang on the main staircase. The museum also holds fossils and animals, objects from Worcester's industrial past and material about Worcestershire sauce. In 1970 the collection of the Worcestershire Regiment moved here from Norton Barracks.
The museum is run by Museums Worcestershire. Building improvements are planned between 2024 and 2027, including better toilets, a new permanent display called Your Worcester that opened in 2025, and a new gallery for the permanent art collection, which is due to open in 2027. A preserved Victorian chemist's shop, moved here from the High Street in 1974, opens on selected days.

The museum describes itself as fully accessible. There are several steps up to the front entrance on Foregate Street, but a level-access entrance at pavement level on Taylor's Lane has a lift serving all floors. The lift is currently out of order while a part is awaited (notice of 8 October 2026), and visitors can phone the museum to discuss access needs. There is an accessible toilet with baby-changing facilities, a wheelchair for public use, an induction loop in the gallery, and guide and assistance dogs are welcome. Building improvements until 2027 may temporarily affect access.

Pushchairs are welcome, but the lift is currently out of order (see accessibility notes), so upper floors may be hard to reach with a pushchair until it is repaired; there is no dedicated pram parking.
