Over het museum
Elgin Museum opened in 1843 and describes itself as Scotland's oldest independent museum. It grew out of the Elgin and Morayshire Scientific Association, which formed in 1836 to set up a museum for the collection and preservation of objects of science. The young architect Thomas Mackenzie designed the Italianate building at the east end of the High Street, which is now category A listed. When the building was finished in 1842 it was not fully paid for, and a bazaar run by the ladies of Elgin raised enough money to settle the debt.
An extension was added at the back in 1896, and the Hall, a gift of the Pennycuick sisters, followed in 1921. The museum was completely overhauled between 1988 and 1990, and its main gallery was redesigned with Heritage Lottery funding in 2003. The museum is owned and managed by The Moray Society and run largely by volunteers.
The collection has about 36,000 items, from fish fossils more than 450 million years old to modern objects. Its fossil collection is Recognised as nationally significant, and there are also archaeology, art, local history, world cultures, natural history, silver and costume collections. Because of ongoing problems with the building, the main galleries are currently closed, and a small pop-up display called Elgin Museum in Miniature is open in the Side Hall.

The following describes the main building and applies once the main galleries, which are currently closed, reopen. There is shallow ramped access into the Side Hall, which has two sets of wide double doors that stay open during opening hours and a wooden floor. The Side Hall toilet is not wheelchair accessible; a second toilet in the main gallery is accessible for ambulant visitors. The main building has no steps at the front entrance, but there is no lift, so access to the upper floor is limited, and the thin-pile carpet in the ground-floor galleries may be difficult for manual wheelchairs. There are hearing loops in the reception area and in the Side Hall. Exiting through the Side Hall involves a small step down. Objects, including handling objects, can be made available given advance notice.
