Over het museum
Groam House Museum stands on the High Street of Rosemarkie on the Black Isle, on what was part of an early Christian monastery about 1,250 years ago. In 1974 an 18th-century house called Groam House was given to Fortrose Town Council, and the district council later took it over to provide a safe home for the Rosemarkie cross-slab. By 1981 the building had been altered, the cross-slab conserved and moved in, and the museum opened for the summer months. Other Pictish stones were moved there from Rosemarkie Church.
In 1992 the council agreed to extend the display space, and the museum became the Pictish Interpretation Centre for Ross and Cromarty. It later gained recognised museum status and grants from bodies such as the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which paid for outreach projects, exhibitions and new acquisitions. After a 1997 exhibition the family of the artist George Bain placed his archive in the museum.
Today the museum is an independent charity with three collecting areas: the Pictish stones of Rosemarkie, local history and archaeology of this part of the Black Isle, and the George Bain Collection of Celtic art, which is recognised as a collection of national significance to Scotland. Its centrepiece is the 2.6 metre high Rosemarkie cross-slab of the 8th century, carved with Pictish symbols and Christian crosses.
