Over het museum

Godolphin was the home of the Godolphin family from the 1300s until 1786, and the estate shows about five thousand years of human activity, from a Neolithic enclosure on Godolphin Hill to Bronze Age field systems. The family rose to power on the profits of tin mining. Over several generations, from the 1400s to about the 1630s, they rebuilt and extended the house and laid out a grid of compartment gardens, whose remains can still be seen. The family held posts such as Sheriff of Cornwall, and one member became Lord High Treasurer to Queen Anne.

In 1786 the estate passed to the Dukes of Leeds, who let it to tenants. Much of the grand house was demolished in the early 1800s, and tenant farmers altered the surviving buildings and stored crops in the King's Room. Parts of the historic garden were preserved under grass.

In 1937 the artist Sydney Schofield bought the property. He and his wife Mary bought back architectural pieces, furnished the house with antiques and restored the roof with a government grant, opening the house to visitors in 1957. The National Trust bought the house and surrounding buildings in 2007 and has carried out major conservation work. Since 2006 Godolphin has been part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site because of its mining heritage. Visitors can explore the garden, outbuildings and wider estate with the Leeds engine house, and walk up Godolphin Hill for views over both coasts.
