Over het museum
Tate St Ives opened in June 1993 as the second of the Tate's galleries outside London, after Tate Liverpool. It was built between 1988 and 1993 on the site of a former gasworks overlooking Porthmeor Beach, to a design by the architects Eldred Evans and David Shalev that echoes the old gasworks. The project was paid for by the European Regional Development Fund, the Henry Moore Foundation and public donations.
The gallery shows modern and contemporary British art with links to the St Ives area, a place that drew many painters and sculptors in the 20th century. Tate had already taken over the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in the town in 1980, and the two sites share a visitor programme, although the Hepworth museum needs a separate ticket.
The gallery closed in October 2015 for an extension by Jamie Fobert Architects, which roughly doubled its space, and reopened in October 2017. It won the Art Fund Museum of the Year prize in 2018. Tate states that its collection displays will be updated from November 2026, with different galleries closing at different times and the work due to finish in early 2027.
