Over het museum
Guildford Museum grew out of the collection of the Surrey Archaeological Society, which was founded in 1854 and gathered excavated objects and donations. In 1898 the collection moved into cottages on the site of the old gatehouse of Guildford Castle, known as Castle Arch, after Guildford Borough Council offered the society the space. Gertrude Jekyll gave her Old Surrey collection in 1907, and the building was extended in 1911.
The council took over the full running of the museum in 1933, and in June 2009 it was merged with the Guildford House Art Gallery under one heritage service. The museum is made up of four main buildings dating from the mid-16th century to the 1920s: Castle Arch House, 48 Quarry Street, the gallery extension and the Muniment Room. Castle Arch House includes walls from the castle gatehouse built in 1256, and part of the gateway arch can still be seen. Over time the buildings have served as a family home, cottages, a girls' school and a garage.
The permanent collection shows objects from Guildford and the surrounding area from prehistoric times to the present day, and there is a gallery for changing exhibitions. The Scullery Playroom offers role play and activities for pre-school children.
