Over het museum
The Museum of Military Medicine records the history of healthcare in the British Army over more than 200 years. It grew out of the Mytchett Collection, which was built up at the Historical Museum at Keogh Barracks in Surrey from 1952. The museum moved into its own building there in 1981, and in 1994 it took in the collection of the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps Museum. It was called the Army Medical Services Museum until it adopted its present name in 2016.
The collections cover the Royal Army Medical Corps, the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps, the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and the Royal Army Dental Corps. They include uniforms and insignia, medical, dental and veterinary equipment, ambulances, an ambulance train ward coach, a large medal collection and Florence Nightingale's carriage from the Crimea.
Because of changes at Keogh Barracks, the museum closed its doors there to visitors on 2 August 2025. It is relocating to Whittington Barracks in Staffordshire, home of the Defence Medical Services, with new modular displays on themes such as medicine, science and technology, conflict and medicine, medical personnel and care, and rehabilitation. No opening date has yet been announced.
