Over het museum
Loseley Park lies about three miles south of Guildford in Surrey. The More family acquired the manor of Loseley in the reign of Henry VII, when Sir Christopher More, a man of influence as Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex, bought it. His son Sir William More began the building work in earnest, and the present Tudor house was built between 1562 and 1568, partly with stone from the ruins of Waverley Abbey. It replaced a smaller house that Elizabeth I had found inadequate for her visits.
The house has remained a private family home for more than 400 years and is still the home of the More-Molyneux family, direct descendants of the builders. Its rooms are not staged: the furniture was originally made for the house and remains in place. The Great Hall holds the coronation chair of George IV, panels painted for the banqueting tents of Henry VIII and work by Grinling Gibbons. The Drawing Room ceiling was commissioned for a visit by James I, and the portraits show the history of the family from Sir William More onwards.
Outside, the 2.5 acre Walled Garden is divided into rooms, with a rose garden of more than a thousand bushes, a flower garden, a white garden, a herb garden and an organic vegetable garden that holds heritage seed library plants. The house is open only by guided tour on selected days in the season, and the estate also hosts weddings, events and filming.
