Beperkt geopend (naar verwachting tot 2027). From 15 February 2026 only a shorter service runs between the main station in Padarn Country Park and Llanberis station (about half a mile, 15 minutes return) because of cable replacement work. Full train journeys along Llyn Padarn are due to return in 2027.

Over het museum

The Llanberis Lake Railway follows part of the route of the former Padarn Railway, a broad-gauge line that carried slate from the Dinorwic quarry to the coast until it closed in 1961. After the quarry shut suddenly in 1969, a company bought several of its steam locomotives at auction, and the county council acquired the old trackbed in 1970.

The new line was built to a narrower gauge than the quarry's own, so all engines and rolling stock had to be regauged. The railway officially opened in May 1971 and the first public trains ran that July. In its first season it carried more than 30,000 passengers.

In 2003 the line was extended from Gilfach Ddu, past the National Slate Museum, into Llanberis village, which turned Gilfach Ddu into a through station. The railway keeps three steam locomotives from the quarries, called Elidir, Thomas Bach and Dolbadarn, together with several diesels used for works trains and as back-up.

The full route runs along the shore of Llyn Padarn with views of Dolbadarn Castle and the Snowdon massif. During 2026 cable replacement work on the railway's land means that only a shorter service runs, and full journeys along the lake are due to return in 2027.
