Over het museum

The Welsh Highland Railway is a narrow-gauge line that crosses the foothills of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) on a 25-mile route between Caernarfon, beside the castle and harbour, and Porthmadog. Today's railway is a rebuilt line: volunteers and supporters of the Welsh Highland Railway Society helped to restore it section by section, with the first stretch to Dinas opening in 1997 and the final piece of track to Porthmadog laid in early 2009, which joined it to the Ffestiniog Railway.

Trains are normally hauled by large Beyer Garratt locomotives, the biggest engines of this gauge. The route climbs from the coast through farmland and forest, passes the summit of the line near Rhyd Ddu, and then descends through Beddgelert and the Aberglaslyn Pass before crossing the Traeth Mawr estuary. The railway also keeps Russell, described as the only surviving original steam locomotive of the first Welsh Highland Railway.

The railway is run together with the Ffestiniog Railway by Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways. Visitors can take full-day or part-day return trips in standard or gold class, break their journey at Beddgelert, and use the modern station at Caernarfon, which has a cafe, shop and events space.
