Over het museum

Oriel Môn opened in 1991 as a purpose-built museum and art gallery in Llangefni, set up to collect and show art and objects connected with Anglesey. It is governed and managed by the Isle of Anglesey County Council as part of its learning department, is a fully accredited museum, and is supported by the Oriel Môn Trust.

The museum tells the story of Anglesey over thousands of years with objects from its archaeology and social history collections. The art galleries show contemporary artists and makers, and six exhibitions a year change in the main Art Gallery.

The building is best known for its dedicated galleries for two Welsh artists. The collection of the wildlife artist Charles Tunnicliffe was acquired by the council in 1981 and is displayed in the Oriel Charles Tunnicliffe gallery. The Oriel Kyffin Williams gallery opened in 2008 and honours Sir Kyffin Williams, one of Wales’s best-loved painters, who died in 2006; it can also show items from national collections, and a statue of him stands outside. Other artists in the collection include the Massey sisters, Claudia Williams, Gwilym Pritchard and Peter Prendergast.

Visitors can also use the café, the shop and the Discovery Den, a hands-on family area.
