Over het museum

The history of Petworth stretches back almost 900 years. A medieval manor house stood here, and its chapel still survives from the fortified great house of 1308–9. For centuries the estate belonged to the Percy family, Earls of Northumberland, whose ties to the crown led to imprisonments in the Tower of London, among them the 9th Earl, known as the Wizard Earl, who was held for almost 17 years after the Gunpowder Plot.

The present baroque palace was created from the 1680s by Lady Elizabeth Percy and her husband Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, who commissioned painted ceilings, carvings by Grinling Gibbons and fine interiors. In the 18th century Lancelot 'Capability' Brown designed a new park and garden landscape. The state rooms are arranged as they were in the time of the 3rd Earl of Egremont, who hung them densely with pictures; J M W Turner painted a watercolour of the Square Dining Room here in 1827.

Over the centuries the Percy, Seymour and Wyndham families assembled one of the most significant art collections in the United Kingdom, with works by Turner, Van Dyck, Blake and Gainsborough and the earliest surviving English globe, dated 1592. The house is now cared for by the National Trust, while Lord and Lady Egremont continue to live in part of it. Across the courtyard, the Servants' Quarters and Historic Kitchens show life below stairs.
