Over het museum
Amberley Museum occupies a 36-acre site that was once a chalk quarry and lime-burning area on the edge of the South Downs. The museum was founded in 1979 and preserves the industrial and working heritage of the south of England. Today the former pits are largely rewilded, and visitors explore them on foot, on the narrow-gauge railway or along unpaved nature trails.
The site is mostly outdoors and holds more than thirty exhibition areas. Industry is represented by the Electricity Hall and by the story of the chalk pits and the people who worked there around the year 1900. Transport is another strong theme, with vintage buses, trains, bicycles, cars and carts, as well as a historic signal box. A building called Connected Earth tells the story of communications, and a pottery and craft workshops show traditional skills, with resident potters demonstrating on selected days.
The museum is independently run and depends on admissions, events and donations. It sits next to Amberley railway station, which makes it easy to reach without a car. Schools use it for hands-on workshops about travel, communication, electricity and everyday life in the chalk pits.
