Over het museum

Arundel Museum grew out of the Arundel Museum Society, which local residents founded in 1963. The first museum opened in March 1964 in the old prison cells beneath the Town Hall and was run entirely by volunteers. In 1977 it moved to a Georgian building at 61 High Street, and the Society became a registered charity. The museum was among the first in the area to gain official registration and, in 2005, accreditation.

In 2007 the lease on the High Street building ended and the collection went into store. The museum then worked from temporary premises, first beside the Mill Road car park and later in Crown Yard Mews. A new building was planned on the site of the former St Nicholas Hall beside the River Arun, with a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £888,000 awarded in 2011. The architect was Graham Whitehouse, and the new museum was opened by the Duke of Norfolk on 24 June 2013.

Today a single modern gallery presents themed displays on the castle, the river port, local trades, pastimes, wartime Arundel and farming. The objects range from flint hand axes some half a million years old and Roman floor tiles to a Second World War air raid siren and 20th-century shop signs. The museum is run by trustees with the help of more than 65 volunteers and also offers school sessions, a community digital archive and room hire.
