Over het museum
Pollok House stands in Pollok Country Park on the south side of Glasgow and was built in 1752 as the home of the Maxwell family, later the Stirling-Maxwells. It was long thought to be the work of William Adam, although he may only have been consulted. Alexander Hunter Crawford modernised the interior in 1899, and Robert Rowand Anderson extended the house in the early twentieth century.
The family owned the estate for almost 700 years. In 1966 Dame Anne Maxwell Macdonald gave the house to the City of Glasgow. The house is owned by Glasgow City Council, and the National Trust for Scotland managed it under contract for 25 years. It is known for a large private collection of Spanish paintings, including works by El Greco, Goya and Murillo, as well as paintings by Rubens and William Blake, silver, glass, porcelain and furniture. Before the closure, visitors could also see the servants' quarters on the lower floor, and the grounds are known for their rhododendrons.
The house closed to visitors on 20 November 2023 for the second phase of a £4 million programme of building repairs led by Glasgow City Council, covering the roof and general building fabric. The closure was first planned to last about two years. No firm reopening date has been confirmed in the sources available.
