Over het museum
Swansea Museum is described as the oldest museum in Wales. It was founded in 1841 by the Royal Institution of South Wales, a society of art and science enthusiasts set up six years earlier. The society commissioned a neo-classical building to house its collections and to provide space for research and learning, and the Grade II* listed building still serves as the main museum.
The collection grew from the society's donations and today covers the history of Swansea, Wales and the wider world. Hor the Egyptian mummy, given to the museum in 1888, is among its best-known objects, and the galleries hold everything from Egyptian and Greek artefacts to a Welsh kitchen, nautical objects, finds from Swansea and Neath, wartime material and natural history. Guardianship passed to the City and County of Swansea in 1990, and the council saved the museum from threatened closure in 1996.
The museum also runs a Tramshed with memorabilia from Swansea's street trams and the Mumbles train, which carried the first passenger railway service in the world. Two vessels from the collection, the lightship Helwick and the steam tug Canning, are moored in Swansea Marina and can be seen from the pontoon and dockside. Most of the collection is stored at a Collections Centre in Landore, on the site of the former Hafod-Morfa Copper Works, which is not open to the public.
