Om museet
The Roger Raveel Museum is in Machelen-aan-de-Leie, the village where the painter Roger Raveel was born in 1921 and where he worked until his death in 2013. The museum opened in 1999 and is devoted to his life and work. The white, sober building was designed by architect Stéphane Beel and fits into the village surroundings rather than rising above them.
Raveel moved from abstract painting to a body of work in which art and everyday reality are directly connected. The collection consists of more than three hundred paintings, including several portraits of his wife Zulma, around 550 drawings and works on paper, and a few sculptures and objects. Since 2011 three colourful poles, the ‘palen van het onbeperkte’ (poles of the unlimited), also stand in the village, and a signposted walking route of 4 km leads past places from the artist's life and work.
The museum was renovated in recent years over roughly a year and a half. Two rooms and the depot received climate control, and the building got solar panels, a new roof, extra insulation and LED lighting, among other things. In summer 2026 the house reopened with the 10th Painting Biennial, a collaboration with Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens in Deurle and the museum of Deinze and the Leie region.
