Om museet
The show flat reproduces a dwelling designed and published in 1946 by the studio of Auguste Perret. The aim was to offer affordable, durable housing to people who had lost their homes during the war. The model has almost no load-bearing walls, apart from a post in the entrance, and uses sliding partitions that allow the space to be organised flexibly. It covers about 99 m² and runs through the building from one side to the other.
The museum opened in 2006, at the time when the rebuilt centre of Le Havre was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is managed by the City of Le Havre, as part of its heritage department. The flat is located on the second floor of a reconstruction-era building.
The layout shows how Perret’s project also influenced everyday life. Period plans, furniture, textiles, lighting, ceramics and everyday objects are on display, some of which were donated by residents of Le Havre. The living room of 1947 features furniture by René Gabriel, and the child’s bedroom of 1952 furniture by Marcel Gascoin. Together they illustrate the shift from post-war restraint to a consumer society.
