Om museet
The Musée du Prieuré occupies a 15th-century inn in the historic center of Harfleur. The building hosted the Portuguese merchants who docked at the town’s royal port; it is also known as the Hôtel des Portugais. Its façades and roofs have been listed as historic monuments since 1959.
The museum illustrates local history from prehistory to the present day. The archaeological collections come from excavations carried out between 1962 and 2012 at the Mont-Cabert and Coteaux du Calvaire sites. They include luxury glassware imported from Italy or the Rhineland (1st–4th centuries) and everyday pottery made on site.
The early Middle Ages are represented by a rich assemblage of jewelry, weapons, ornaments and everyday objects. Finds from excavations of houses dating from the 14th to the 17th centuries evoke urban life in the medieval and early modern periods. The 20th century is represented by a collection of prints and objects from a dairy farm that operated from 1920 to 1963. Every year the museum offers temporary exhibitions and activities.
