Om museet
The first fine arts museum in Le Havre, built in 1845, was destroyed by the bombings of September 1944. Only the paintings, which had been moved to safety during the war, were saved. In 1951 the city decided to rebuild a modern museum, driven by Georges Salles, director of the Musées de France, and Reynold Arnould, curator of the city's museums.
The new building was designed by the architects Guy Lagneau, Raymond Audigier, Michel Weill and Jean Dimitrijevic, with engineers including Jean Prouvé. A cube of glass, steel and aluminium, it lets light in from every side and can be easily reconfigured. In front of the façade stands Le Signal, a monumental sculpture by Henri-Georges Adam. André Malraux opened the building on 24 June 1961 as a Musée-Maison de la culture, a venue for exhibitions, concerts and lectures.
The building was restructured between 1995 and 1999 by Emmanuelle and Laurent Beaudouin, and the mezzanine was redesigned in 2006. In 2011 the museum became the Musée d'art moderne André Malraux, shortened to MuMa.
The collections grew through several gifts and bequests: the studio holdings of Eugène Boudin in 1900, the Marande bequest in 1936, the bequest of Raoul Dufy's widow in 1963, and the donations of the Senn-Foulds family in 2004 and 2009. The museum thus holds one of the richest French collections centred on Impressionism.
