Om museet
The château grew out of a medieval hunting lodge deep in the forest and was enlarged over the centuries by almost all the French sovereigns. In the 16th century Francis I made it a prestigious residence and brought in Italian artists, including Rosso Fiorentino and Primaticcio, who developed a court art of great influence there. Henry IV, then Louis XIII and Louis XIV, in turn added courtyards, wings and gardens.
After the Revolution, Napoleon I had the château restored; he called it the “house of the centuries”, and there he established his power. In this palace he signed his abdication in 1814 and bade farewell to the Guard in the Cour du Cheval-Blanc. Napoleon III later had a court theatre built, the Théâtre impérial, which opened in 1857.
Today the château is a national museum. The route covers the Grands Appartements, the Galerie François Ier, the ballroom, the Chapelle de la Trinité, the Théâtre impérial and the Musée Napoléon Ier. The courtyards and gardens are freely accessible, and the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
