Om museet
The Geothermal Exhibition (Jarðhitasýningin) is in the Hellisheiði Power Station at Hengill, one of the largest geothermal power stations in the world, about 25 km east of Reykjavík. The power station is owned and operated by Orka náttúrunnar and produces electricity for the national grid and hot water for the capital area.
At the exhibition visitors can learn how geothermal energy is used for power generation and distribution. The exhibition is interactive and based on multimedia. It deals, among other things, with the geology of Iceland, the history of geothermal energy, and innovation projects near the power station, such as Carbfix, where carbon dioxide is turned into stone. Visitors can look into the turbine halls of the power station and examine heat exchangers and turbines in 3D models, but it is not possible to enter the power station itself for safety reasons.
Next to the exhibition is the café Kaffi Orka and a souvenir shop with products from the local area. Groups can get guided tours, and education is offered for school groups.
