Trompenburg Tuinen & Arboretum
Eight-hectare botanical garden in Rotterdam-Kralingen with a tree collection, desert greenhouse and food forest – registered as a museum.
Om museet
In the late Middle Ages, the land along the Honingerdijk was peat bog belonging to the lordship of Kralingen. Only the dikes – the Honingerdijk is named after the former Slot Honingen castle – made it usable as pasture; the narrow plots separated by ditches can still be seen in the oldest part of the garden.
In the 19th century, wealthy Rotterdam families had country estates here. On the Zomerlust estate, the Smith family – later Van Hoey Smith – laid out a garden in the English landscape style and began collecting trees; the garden takes its name from the neighboring Trompenburg estate. From 1950, J. R. P. van Hoey Smith greatly expanded the collection, especially oaks, beeches, rhododendrons and succulents.
In 1958 the Stichting Arboretum Trompenburg was established, and the garden opened to visitors on a limited basis. Later the Woudestein and Perenhof gardens were added, followed in 2000 by Tuin Excelsior. In 1996 Gert Fortgens became the first director from outside the family; a new entrance pavilion made visiting easier.
For its anniversary in 2008, the garden was renamed Trompenburg Tuinen & Arboretum, and at the same time De Overtuin opened, where a food forest (voedselbos) now grows. The garden is privately funded and registered as a museum with a living collection; its oak, beech, holly and hosta collections are part of the Nationale Plantencollectie (NPC, Dutch national plant collections).
