Om museet
The collection goes back to Henk de Groot, who was born in 1930 and was fascinated by electricity and radios even as a child. His heart belonged to valve radios, and over five decades he gathered devices together. From early on he wanted to turn them into a museum after retirement.
After forty years working for the electricity company IJsselcentrale, he was able to take early retirement. The company then offered an empty high-voltage distribution building in Hengelo, which De Groot converted together with his wife and helpers. The museum opened on 16 May 1992 in the building, which measured just ten by ten metres; a few years later it became a foundation with six staff.
Because the city wanted to redevelop Hengelo-Süd, the building had to make way by the end of 2007. A new building was constructed at the present location on Johan Wagenaarstraat, and the volunteers did almost all of the fitting-out themselves. The first visitors came from March 2009, and the official opening followed on 16 May 2009.
Today the museum shows the technical development of the radio from Morse telegraphy around 1860 to the valve era around 1960. This includes shellac records and long-playing records by well-known pre-war artists, a library with specialist literature and circuit diagrams, and exhibitions that are also lent out to external venues.
