Om museet
Museum Hengelo is housed in a building on Beekstraat that was converted from a residential and commercial building into a mansion in 1881. The Van Benthem family lived here; the unmarried Elisabeth van Benthem lived in the house until her death in 1973 and wished it to be preserved for Hengelo. In 1974 the foundation Oald Hengel bought the building with the support of the municipality and set up an antiquities room in 1976. In February 2004 this became an officially recognised museum.
In 1995 a new wing was added, and in 1998 the old building was declared a Rijksmonument. After construction work opposite, subsidence damage occurred in 2000, so that the foundations had to be reinforced and the house thoroughly renovated at the same time; in 2003 it received a completely new interior.
Today the museum tells the story of the industrial town with paintings, prints, textiles and archaeological finds. Of particular note are Art Nouveau copperwork from the art studio of the firm Dikkers after designs by Johanna van Eijbergen, as well as collections on textiles, menthol and the Second World War. The archaeology department came into being after the excavation of the Huys Hengelo in 1995. On the ground floor there is a knowledge and information centre with books, photographs, films and archival records on the city's history.
