Om museet
The Zoutmuseum in Delden is devoted entirely to the subject of salt. The occasion was a drilling in 1886 in the park of Twickel Castle: drinking water was being sought for the castle, and salt water was found instead. The find only became economically usable during the First World War, when imports of salt from Germany stopped. Extraction then began in Boekelo, and later the salt industry shifted to Hengelo, where the Twente Canal offered better transport routes.
The museum is housed in a building that served as Delden's town hall until 1811 and afterwards as the municipal building; Queen Beatrix opened the museum on 27 August 1985. After a thorough restoration and redesign it reopened on 9 May 2009. It is run by the Stichting Zoutmuseum Delden, which regards itself as a cultural foundation (ANBI).
The permanent exhibition examines the origin and discovery of the salt deposits in Twente, salt extraction past and present in different regions of the world, as well as uses, chemistry, symbolism, health and the environment. On the redesigned upper floor stands a collection of more than 2,000 salt cellars, from hollowed-out pieces of bread to elaborate table centrepieces. Information panels, objects, films and hands-on stations make the subject accessible to visitors of all ages and to school classes.
