Om museet

The Hof van Nederland stands in the centre of Dordrecht, the oldest city in Holland, and goes back to a monastery of the Augustinians, who settled here around 1275. The foundation stone of the monastery building was laid in 1293 and the church was added in 1512; the complex burned down several times and was rebuilt with the help of the citizens. When Dordrecht converted to the Reformed faith in 1572 during the Eighty Years' War, the monks had to leave, and the city put the buildings to other uses.

From 19 to 23 July 1572, the States of Holland met in secret in the former refectory. Twelve cities entrusted William of Orange with leadership of the revolt, approved funds for soldiers and discussed freedom of faith and conscience; the meeting is regarded as the seed of the Republic and went down in history as the First Free Assembly of the States. In 1575 the Union of Dordrecht followed here. In 1585 the city had the monastery converted into a court for the English governor Leicester; later the complex served, among other things, as a drill ground for the militia, a cattle market and a school.

After a restoration by the firm Mecanoo, the building opened as a museum in April 2015. It sees itself as a canon museum and, under the motto "Het Hof vertelt", tells how the Dutch dealt with their freedoms, from medieval privileges to the De Witt brothers and the Synod of Dort. It belongs to the Dordrecht museum group together with the Dordrechts Museum and Huis Van Gijn.
