Om museet
The house on the Wolwevershaven was built in 1649, when the wealthy merchant Jacob Trip the Younger bought a plot on the quay and had a residence built. In 1733 two neighboring houses were joined, creating today's façade. In 1780 the round Maas Room was added in the neoclassical Louis XVI style; its domed space partly projects over the water. At the end of the 18th century, the mayor Anthonij van den Santheuvel lived in the house.
In the early 21st century the Gooshouwer family lived here and assembled a collection with great care. When they moved to another house, the owners decided to give the building a museum function; since the end of 2011 it has been open as Museum aan de Maas, now Het Dordts Patriciërshuis. A two-year renovation later also made the cellar with 17th-century tiles accessible.
The tour leads through the period rooms on the ground floor, with furniture and everyday objects from around 1770 to 1820; through the Maas Room, with a view of the busiest three-river confluence in Europe (Oude Maas, Beneden Merwede and Noord); up to the attic with servants' rooms and a film; and into the exhibition rooms on the upper floor. The collection includes works by Dordrecht painters such as Cornelis Kuipers, Aert Schouman, Johannes Christiaan Schotel and Leonard de Koningh, as well as drawings, glass and clothing. Volunteers greet guests as if they were visitors to the household.
