Nederlands Stoommachinemuseum
Museum with the Netherlands' largest collection of working steam engines, housed in the Vier Noorder Koggen steam pumping station near Medemblik.
Om museet
The Vier Noorder Koggen steam pumping station on the Oosterdijk south of Medemblik went into operation in 1869. It was meant to support the windmills of the water board of the same name, which struggled to pump polder water into the Zuiderzee when water levels were high. The design was by the self-taught engineer Boote de Vries. In 1897 four centrifugal pumps replaced the old paddle wheels and Archimedean screws, and in 1908 a second building section was added with one of the largest pumps in Europe at the time – after which the windmills became redundant.
In 1940 the older section was electrified, in 1971 the last steam engine was taken out of service, and in 1978 the pumping station was shut down for good. The building, now a Rijksmonument (national monument), then became home to the private collection of collector and yacht builder Kees Jongert; it has been open to the public as the Nederlands Stoommachinemuseum since 1985.
The museum displays a large number of working stationary and mobile steam engines, steam models, a forge from 1869 and, on the outdoor grounds, the Boele 9 steam crane from Rotterdam, among other things. Since 2005 the coal-fired bucket dredger "Vooruit" from 1941, which volunteers have brought back under steam, has been moored in a specially dug inner harbor. On steam days a stoker fires up the Lancashire boiler and sets the engines in motion.
A redesigned visitor center with a café, a permanent exhibition on the history of the pumping station and on water management, and a steam lab for school classes was added later. The museum is run by a foundation with about 100 volunteers; the collection belongs to a separate foundation, and the building and grounds to the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier.
