Route through the Schathuys and the open-air village with new works by artists and designers inspired by the history of the Zuiderzee.
The impetus came from the Afsluitdijk (Enclosure Dam): when the Zuiderzee became the IJsselmeer in 1932 and an entire way of life built on fishing, maritime trade and traditional costume threatened to disappear with it, people began collecting its traces. In 1948 the Zuiderzeemuseum was founded as a national museum, and in 1950 the indoor museum, now called the Schathuys, opened in Enkhuizen. It occupies a row of historic buildings on the Wierdijk, including a former warehouse of the Dutch East India Company; some storehouses were moved here stone by stone from elsewhere in the town.
From the late 1960s, the open-air museum was created on a former storage yard of the Zuiderzee Works. By 1983 more than 140 houses, workshops, a church, shops and fishermen's cottages from towns around the former Zuiderzee had been dismantled and reassembled into neighborhoods modeled on real town layouts – such as a street from Harderwijk or a harbor based on Marken. Queen Beatrix opened the village in 1983, and a year later the museum was named European Museum of the Year.
't Zuiderzeedorp shows everyday life between about 1880 and 1930, with craftspeople such as a blacksmith, ropemaker, basket maker and fish smoker, as well as actors portraying residents of the time. The Schathuys holds traditional costumes, painted furniture, tools, maps and art, and has the largest ship collection of any Dutch museum. In 2025 the museum drew more than 300,000 visitors for the first time since 1999.
