16. oktober 2026 – 10. januar 2027
The first retrospective in the Netherlands of the American painter James McNeill Whistler, who provoked the art world between London and Paris.
12. februar 2027 – 20. juni 2027
The first retrospective of French painter Eva Gonzalès (1847–1883), with paintings and pastels from international collections.
After Vincent van Gogh's death in 1890, a large part of his work remained in the family's possession: first Theo's widow, Jo van Gogh-Bonger, managed the estate and made the painter famous, later her son Vincent Willem van Gogh. To keep the collection together permanently, the family transferred it in 1962 to the newly founded Vincent van Gogh Stichting (foundation); in return, the Dutch state committed to building and running a museum.
The main building was designed by Gerrit Rietveld; after his death, his partners completed the building, which opened in 1973. In 1999 an oval exhibition wing by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa was added, followed in 2015 by a glass entrance building facing Museumplein.
The museum owns around 200 paintings, some 500 drawings and almost all of Van Gogh's surviving letters, complemented by works by his contemporaries and role models. The permanent exhibition leads chronologically through his life – from the dark peasant paintings of Nuenen through Paris to the intensely colorful works from Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers. Temporary exhibitions shed light on artists of his time and on his legacy.
The Van Gogh Museum is one of the most visited museums in the Netherlands; the vast majority of its visitors come from abroad. The foundation also manages the Collectie Mesdag in Den Haag and is a center of Van Gogh research.
