Om museet
In 1935 the founding assembly of the "Hernalser Heimatmuseum" met in the district office. It opened in November 1938 on the third floor of a school on Kindermanngasse, divided into natural history, history and trades departments. During the Nazi era it was declared the "Kreismuseum" for Hernals, Währing and Döbling; in 1945 bombs severely damaged the school building.
After the war, director Franz Zabusch expanded the collections with great zeal and made the museum a fixed part of the district's cultural life. In 1966 it moved to the former Hernalser Sparkassa building on Hernalser Hauptstraße, built in the Art Nouveau style and now used by Bank Austria. After a closure from 2012, it reopened in 2014 in new rooms in the same building.
The permanent exhibition leads from the winegrowing villages of Hernals, Dornbach and Neuwaldegg to the big-city district. Its main themes are the Schrammel brothers and the Volkssänger, the entertainment venues of the suburb, viticulture, sport with the Engelmann artificial ice rink, transport, the Reformation and the Kalvarienberg, as well as former Hernals businesses, to which a room of its own is dedicated. The museum also shows special exhibitions and hosts numerous school classes every year.
