Vienna's emergency rescue service dates back to the period after the Ringtheater fire of 1881: the voluntary Rettungsgesellschaft (rescue society) began operating in 1882, and in 1938 the City of Vienna took over the service. Today, the Berufsrettung Wien (Vienna professional rescue service) is a municipal institution, and the rescue museum tells its history.

The museum was founded in 1991. The volunteer curator Erich Müllner later rebuilt the rooms from the ground up and designed them with great personal dedication. On October 5, 2013, the museum section in the Hernals rescue station reopened; it is located in the building of a station of the Berufsrettung that is still active, on Gilmgasse.

Three rooms with about 300 exhibits document how the Vienna rescue service came into being and developed, and they also shed light on the development of emergency medicine before patients reached the clinic. The museum is only accessible to registered groups; the curator leads guests through the exhibition himself.
