Om museet
The Pavelhaus is named after the Slovene poet and ethnologist Ágoston Pável and belongs to the Article VII Cultural Association for Styria. The association was founded in Graz in 1988 to demand the rights of the Slovene minority in Styria; its name refers to Article 7 of the 1955 Austrian State Treaty. In 1995 it acquired a derelict farmstead in Laafeld, which was renovated with support from Austria and Slovenia. The house opened in May 1998.
Today it sees itself as a museum, gallery, event venue and meeting place for everyone interested. The permanent exhibition sheds light on the history and culture of the Slovenes in southeastern Styria, supplemented by multimedia contributions from the community. There are also changing art exhibitions, readings, concerts, theatre, discussions and Slovene language courses; since 2001 the house has also worked with the Steirischer Herbst festival.
The association also publishes several series, including catalogues, a literary series and a scholarly series. The house has a small library of around 2,700 items. The Pavelhaus sees itself as an intercultural meeting place between Austria and Slovenia.
