Om museet
The Diözesanmuseum Graz was founded in 1932 at the initiative of Prince-Bishop Ferdinand Pawlikowsky and the first curator, Johannes Mandl. It was set up in three superimposed chapels beside Graz Cathedral and was intended to protect medieval works of art from Styrian parishes from decay and sale, and to serve as a teaching collection for aspiring priests. Since Graz has no cathedral treasury of its own, it was from the outset a museum of the whole diocese.
During the Nazi era the house was largely closed, and in 1942 the most valuable pieces were moved to storage elsewhere. After its reopening in 1948, regular opening hours were lacking for a long time. With the liturgical reform, many furnishings from churches came into the museum’s care, so it needed larger premises: in 1981 it moved into newly designed halls in the Graz Minorite Monastery with around 600 square metres of exhibition space. After a general renovation, the permanent exhibition “Kirche – Kunst – Kostbarkeiten” opened there in 2002; in the same year the museum received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
Because the lease was expiring, in 2009 the museum moved with its more than 5,500 objects to the ground floor of the Graz seminary on Bürgergasse, where it reopened in March 2010. Alongside the permanent collection of panel paintings, sculptures and goldsmith work, it presents annually changing thematic exhibitions and a large Christmas exhibition with nativity scenes. The museum also offers tours of the Graz “Stadtkrone” with the cathedral, mausoleum and Bishop’s Court.
