Om museet
The first steam railway of the Habsburg Monarchy, the Emperor Ferdinand Northern Railway from Vienna towards Kraków, began operating in 1837 with the section from Floridsdorf to Wagram, today's Deutsch-Wagram. The line opened on 23 November 1837, and regular service followed in January 1838. The museum commemorates these beginnings of the railway in Austria.
It opened in 1987 for the 150th anniversary of the railway and is located in the workers' waiting room next to the station, built in 1908. The listed building belongs to ÖBB, which in 2024 restored the exterior with its half-timbering, windows and doors. The museum is run by the Museumsgesellschaft Deutsch-Wagram with volunteer helpers.
The permanent exhibition shows uniforms, badges, swords and accessories from the imperial era; a model train recalls the locomotive "Austria" of 1837. Nearby are the old station from around 1852, the water station built in 1846, the oldest surviving one in Austria, and a sandstone monument of the locomotive "Austria". The offering is complemented by changing exhibitions.
