Om museet

The museum is located on the site of the former ÖBB locomotive depot at Strasshof an der Nordbahn, which closed at the end of 1978. As early as the 1970s, members of the 1. österreichischer Straßenbahn- und Eisenbahnklub (1.öSEK), founded in 1972, brought steam locomotives from the state collection that had been left standing in scattered locations to the roundhouse in order to save them from decay. After long negotiations the complex was placed under heritage protection, and in 1983 the association leased the site from ÖBB.

After years of volunteer work restoring the devastated roundhouse, the first visitor season began on 1 April 1984. Since then, association members have returned numerous locomotives and carriages to working order, including steam locomotives that were used for anniversaries and special runs. Around the turn of the millennium, a large part of the state's standard-gauge vehicle collection was brought together at Strasshof; after the cooperation with the Technisches Museum Wien ended, ÖBB-Holding took over the partnership in 2007.

In 2009 the museum received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality, and in 2013 the association was able to purchase the roughly 153,000-square-metre site, thereby securing the museum's permanent operation. Today the museum shows over 350 vehicles as well as historic operating facilities such as the turntable, water tower and coal cranes, complemented by model railways, a signal park and running operations on Sundays and public holidays.

Permanente udstillinger

• Fahrzeugsammlung im Heizhaus und auf dem Freigelände – Locomotives and carriages from various eras of Austrian railway history, some in working order, displayed in the hall or in the extensive grounds.
• Historische Betriebsanlagen – The turntable, water tower, water and coal cranes, ash hoist and smithy show how a locomotive depot worked in the steam era.
• Signalpark und Sicherungstechnik – Signals and interlocking technology illustrate how train traffic was safeguarded in the past.

Puzzle rally for young and old across the grounds, garden railway ride through the children's area and model railways. Children's birthday parties (April to October, Friday or Saturday) with a children's tour, snack and garden railway ride at €20 per child, minimum 5 children. Pushchair-friendly and with a baby-changing room according to the tourism portal.

Transport & parkering

By car via the B8 towards Gänserndorf; in Strasshof take the third exit from the roundabout at the edge of town and follow the signs; access to the museum is permitted despite a no-entry sign because of construction work at the Silberwald railway crossing. By bicycle via Eurovelo 9 to Pillichsdorf, then on the “Dampfross und Drahtesel” cycle path.
