Om museet

The history of the palace can be traced back to 1343. In the 17th century Georg Wilhelm Jörger had the building remodelled in the Early Baroque style. In 1725 the estate was sold to Emperor Charles VI, who gave it to Prince Eugene of Savoy in the same year. The field marshal commissioned Lukas von Hildebrandt with the Baroque conversion, which took place between 1725 and 1736 and gave the house, with its four wings around a rectangular courtyard, its present appearance. In the park, the Prince Eugene Pavilion was built in 1728 with frescoes by the Augsburg painter Jonas Drentwett.

Until 1874 the palace belonged to the Kollonitsch family, and afterwards until 2001 to the Archdiocese of Vienna, which used it, among other things, as an agricultural school and as a social institution. In 2001 the Coptic Orthodox Church acquired the complex and established the Monastery of Saint Anthony there, which the press describes as the European headquarters of the Copts.

The palace also houses the Coptic Museum. It offers insights into the Egyptian Christian faith community and its history, from the beginnings to the present, including icons, liturgical vestments, manuscripts and everyday objects. The museum can be visited by registration.
