Om museet
A private association founded the Feld- und Industriebahnmuseum (Field and Industrial Railway Museum) in 1965. From 1967 it presented its vehicles in Vienna-Hietzing on a rented site next to a signal box on Spohrstraße, by the Verbindungsbahn.
In 1983 the collection moved to Freiland in the municipality of Türnitz in Lower Austria, onto the grounds of a former paper mill. The former boiler house has served as a workshop and depot ever since, while most of the objects stand in the open-air grounds.
The collection traces the development of field and industrial railways from the late 19th century to the present day. It comprises more than 50 locomotives and over 180 wagons, mostly in 600 mm gauge. About 500 metres of track show different forms of track construction, points, turntables, and three- and four-rail track.
Following the construction of a flood relief channel on the leased land, the members, all of them volunteers, are redesigning the grounds with a new station, additional exhibition space and a second demonstration line.
