Om museet
Eduard Paul Tratz founded the museum in 1924 as the "New Natural History Museum"; it was initially housed in the former Hofstallkaserne barracks, where the Festspielhaus stands today. It has been called the "Haus der Natur" since 1936. After the "Anschluss" in 1938 it was incorporated into the SS research organization "Ahnenerbe", whose aims Tratz actively supported as head of a department. From 2010 to 2020 the museum had this period examined by a panel of experts; the results have been part of the permanent exhibition since 2019.
Tratz returned to the head of the museum in 1949, and in 1959 it moved into the former Ursuline convent on Museumsplatz – a building by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach that belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Salzburg's Old Town. Under his successor Eberhard Stüber the inner courtyard was built over (1981), the reptile zoo opened in 1982 and the aquarium in 1983.
After the Salzburg Museum moved out of the neighboring building, the museum expanded and was reopened in 2009 as the "Museum of Nature and Technology" with a science center and a hall for special exhibitions. The reptile and amphibian zoo was fundamentally renovated from 2022 and reopened in March 2025. Today the themes range from evolution, the Ice Age and dinosaurs to space, the human body and crystals, as well as the habitats of Salzburg; the museum also operates the VEGA Observatory on the Haunsberg.
